What we discovered, today was another clean up day. Why so many clean up days you ask? Well, on April 27 it is Sierra Leone's 50th Anniversary of independence. So the people are spending a lot of time cleaning up the town.
It was rather strange walking around with all the stands closed and hardly any vehicles or people on the streets.
This is the alley we use as a short cut and also to look at fabric...
This is the same short cut a few hours later...
For some reason, this little girl took a liking to Mike. She stood next to him holding his hand for the longest time. We tried to find out her age...3? maybe 5? She really did not know...her mom was unable to send her to school.
Then we stopped for a bite to eat. The fellow sitting next to Mike (Joseph) somewhere along the line, attached himself to us and spent the day following us around. He did not ask for anything-we bought him a drink and he ate with us also.
It was the funniest place to eat. When we asked for a drink, he emptied his fridge and it had about 12 drinks in it. There was no menu-the option was fish or chicken. That was it. At one point smoke came billowing into the room...we were told, "Don't worry they are just cooking..." The meal took about 1 1/2 hours to cook. We were not sure if they just killed the chicken and ran to the market for the fish...sometimes it is better to not ask questions!
View from the "restaurant".
The walls were decorated with these interesting murals...
The outside of "Jodees". I probably would not recommend to eat there again...but it certainly added to the memories of the day.
